Deep Thoughts with the Big Hurt

By Nick Shlain

Here is what Frank Thomas, future HOF-er and Baseball Analyst for TBS, said before Wednesday’s Gm. 1 with the Cubs @ Diamondbacks:

It is old energy vs. new energy…

Uhhhh….What?

This brings in two common baseball misconceptions.

1. Postseason experience is necessary. Yeah, the ‘03 Marlins were full of grizzly vets. Oh, wait. No they weren’t. They were filled with dominant, young arms like Josh Beckett. And one of the greatest young hitters to ever come into this game in Miguel Cabrera, who didn’t even have that much MLB experience (less than half a year) let alone playoff experience.

2. The only thing young players are good for is energy. Yeah, that lasts for about a week. Young players are good because they are the only cost efficient talent there is in this game. You have to pay $40M minimum for a decent SP on the free agent market. You can get Joba or Ian or Phil for less than 500K for three years. No, but yeah, Robbie Cano is only good for ENERGY! and not his 124 OPS+.

Anyone else think TBS randomly getting baseball games is like how VS is the National NHL feed?

And its even more crazy because it isn’t worse than the decision to appoint Dane Cook as the spokesman for the playoffs.

Anyway, Thomas later chimed in on the NYY-CLE series:

(Fausto) Carmona is a young pitcher, I don’t like that matchup against the Yankee mystique.

I don’t care what offense it is, anytime a pitcher with a 145 ERA+ is on the mound you have to like the matchup. I don’t care if the kid is the 12-year old from Rookie of the Year, you have to like the matchup.

Carmona has a 4.15 ERA in 13 IP against the Yanks this year (which I’m sure Thomas doesn’t know), which isn’t great, but isn’t terrible.

By the way, Yankee mystique? You play the game, are you afraid of the mythical Yankee mystique? Wow, so a 6′5, 257 pound slugger and one of the best offensive players of his generation is afraid of a mythical, nothing in a name. I guess he is, he posted a .703 OPS against the Yankees mystique this year.

I’m going to enjoy the Frank Thomas Era at TBS.
