I hate Dane Cook

October 14, 2007

but, I love this.

Hank Speaks

October 10, 2007

“I wouldn’t call it ‘disappointment,’ ” he said. “The big thing for me, and I think for all of us, is the optimism for the next five to 10 years. We’ve got the young pitchers and the young players we’ve got coming, position players. Next year, (Joba) Chamberlain and (Phil) Hughes will be starters. We’ve got (Ian) Kennedy coming along. We’ve got some other kids in the minors. It’s going to be real nice.

“We’re looking pretty good. Keep trying to shore up the bullpen, and we’ll be set.” (Source)

With him and Hal, we’ll be set after George.

Mo Money Mo Problems

October 10, 2007

After he got done with the interview, Mo jokingly told us to visit his restaurant in New Rochelle and spend some money. “I don’t have a job,” he said. (Source)

Phil Rogers is a douche

October 10, 2007

Rodriguez is almost certainly gone, which is probably fine with the Yankees’ constituency after another low-impact October, but Rivera and Posada could decide there’s no compelling reason to stick around for life after Torre. (Source)

Rodriguez is “certainly gone”? Well, he hasn’t opted out yet, so nothing is certain.

The Yankee constituency wouldn’t mind him leaving? Yeah, we love Wilson Betemit.

Low impact October? Yeah, if you consider .267/.353/.467 low impact.

Plus, by that logic, Derek Jeter (3/17, 0 BB, 0 XBH, 3 GIDP) should be “certainly gone” too.

Anyone else hate Scott Boras?

October 10, 2007

I think Alex could play very reasonably until he’s 45. So you’re talking about a situation where we want this guy to be identified with one franchise and one uniform for a very, very long time.” (Source)

This is exactly why I don’t want to deal with ARod if he opts out. Either get him to sign an extension with the $21M from Texas or let him go.

Things to look forward to

October 9, 2007
  1. A new manager in ‘08, it looks like Torre is gone (cheering, jubilation).
  2. The best young pitchers in the game in out rotation. ‘08 will see Phil, Ian and Joba in the starting rotation. Read this interview with Nardi Contreras (from PP.com), it will get you pumped.
  3. For the second year in a row, the Yankees will be drafting ahead of the Red Sox. This leaves only the Tigers as competition for high priced talent with signability issues in the draft. Great news.
  4. Dead weight money coming off the books.
  5. Luis Vizcaino possibly being a Type-A FA and getting NYY another early pick letting him go and implementing a good, YOUNG, bullpen with some combination of the following: Edwar Ramirez, Chris Britton, Ross Ohlendorf, Humberto Sanchez (if unable to start), Mark Melancon, JB Cox, Brian Bruney, Jose Veras and Kevin Whelan.
  6. Jose Tabata, coming off of succesful surgery, starting at AA-Trenton at the age of 20.
  7. The FA Sagas of ARod, Mo and Po.

What to do with the offense

October 9, 2007

C Re-Sign Posada
1B Move Hideki Matsui, bad knees no more LF for him
2B Cano
SS Jeter
3B Sign ARod to an extension $$$
LF Damon fulltime
CF Melky
RF Pickup Abreu’s Option for $16M
DH Giambi’s last year before we buy him out

We don’t need to sign any of these crappy Type-A FAs and lose our first round pick. Bring these guys back.

And so it begins…

October 9, 2007

“They had the opportunities and they didn’t do nothing with me,” Rivera said, according to the Star-Ledger of Newark.

“So we’ll see what happens. … This is a business.”"They figured it was the best for the team and I’m OK with it. … We’ll see what happens. But I would never hold anything against [the Yankees].” (Source)

I find it very irritating that we handed Kei Igawa $46M, but we are penny pinching with the Greatest Closer of All-Time.

I’d love to sign Mo to a Pettitte-like contract, one year guaranteed and one option year for $12-15M a year.

Cash, let these guys go

October 9, 2007

Clemens $17M
Torre $7M

Vizcaino $3M

Minky $1.5M

with this also coming off the books

Myers $1.25M

Wright $4M

Vasquez $3M

Johnson $2M

total dollars coming off payroll: $38.75M of dead weight.

The Ultimate Irony

October 8, 2007

In 2005, when Yankee GM Brian Cashman’s job was ‘on the line’, Cash called up Chien-Ming Wang to show that the farm system can produce. Wang did produce, posting an ERA+ of 111 in 116.1 IP in 17 starts down the stretch in ‘05 on the way to another Yankee division title.

Now, in 2007, Manager Joe Torre’s job was ‘on the line.’ What did Wang do?

6.2 IP 14 HA 12 ER 4 BB 2 K

Wang saved Cash’s job in ‘05 and if George wasn’t blowing smoke, he cost Torre his job in ‘07. Ironic.

Bullpen Situation for Gm. 4

October 8, 2007

For some reason, whether it be pressure from the Boss, normal JT Stupidity, or whatever, Joe Torre decided to have Joba Chamberlain throw 38 pitches last night.

How will this effect him tonight?

Who knows, but he will be good for 1 IP at most. I don’t even know if he’ll be able to do that, Joba looked gassed at the end of his outing on Sunday.

The Great Mariano Rivera only threw 10 pitches on Sunday (and dominated), he should be good for 2 IP tonight. I’d have him up in the pen or in the game in the 8th inning.

Are you effing serious?

October 8, 2007

From the man who needs no introduction to me killing his blogs, Peter Gammons:

Look at the Yankees and see Torre’s patience — where would they be without Melky Cabrera in center, Robinson Cano at second, Chamberlain and Hughes? Oh yes. While developing those kids and changing the future of the franchise, Torre is the only manager to be in the postseason in 2006 and 2007.

Torre’s patience with young players?!?!? Are you kidding? The same guy that burried Chris Britton, Edwar Ramirez and Wilson Betemit? The guy who just picked Ron Villone over Ian Kennedy?

Yeah, Torre is patient with young playe….. I couldn’t even type it all with a straight face, Gammons is a joke.
